Welcome to INJAZ Al-Arab's Annual Report 2018-2019

Board Chair Letter

Taking a look at the past years, and how INJAZ was born in the region to spark a vision, and champion opportunities, I truly feel that this is a moment of gratitude. This year marks 15 years of INJAZ, a legacy that we have built for the future of our youth in MENA and with the single hope of creating an optimistic outlook for them. Not only does this year mark INJAZ’s 15th anniversary, but it also marks JA’s 100th anniversary. 2019 reflects on a journey that has been and will continue to offer limitless potential to the generations to come.

Our MENA region has one of the youngest populations in the world with over 200 million youth, 65% of which under the age of 25. This has contributed to creating a competitive job market and resulted in the highest youth unemployment rates in the world, with some countries having rates reaching up to 35%. Since its inception in 2004, INJAZ has empowered Arab youth by providing workforce readiness skills, entrepreneurship training, and financial literacy to more than 3.5 million students in the MENA region in order to combat this economic crisis within the region. The organization has already taken big steps in achieving this goal and we are confident that we can overcome these daunting challenges and make a significant impact in diminishing youth unemployment from its core.

It is remarkable to reflect on how this organization has developed throughout the years, and I cannot overstate my enthusiasm in being the chairwoman for an organization that has made such an outstanding impact. INJAZ started with just one local office and now operates in 13 countries. We’ve grown from a few hundred volunteers to 84 thousands, a few schools and partnerships to 27 thousand schools, 1,800 universities, and 13 ministries of education expanding to become the largest non-profit organization dedicated to overcoming unemployment in the region. We serve as a shining example of success in our mission and continue to expand, hoping to reach an annual student outreach of one million by the year 2020. With every year that passes by, this organization continues to show an upward trend in its successes.

With our goals set for the years to come and with a steadfast passion and focused commitment , it is important for me to point out that none of this would be possible without the unbending support from our prominent stakeholders, volunteers, member nations, and all who have taken part in our vision to create promising futures for our students. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to those significant partners from the private sector, as well as many others in making the measures of our successes possible. Sincere appreciation to JA Worldwide for providing a global network umbrella which has enabled us to streamline our efforts and further focus our attention on our mandate. We continue to rely on such support to make our vision possible for youth in the Arab world.

Lastly, and with heartfelt appreciation, I would like to thank the INJAZ Al-Arab team for their firm dedication to this vision and passion for this mission. It is with such energy that we achieve success. Remembering our late Soraya Salti, her legacy will remain the torch we pass from one generation to another to continue the journey.

Congratulations INJAZ Al-Arab network on 15 years of achievements.

CEO’s Letter

It’s been a journey, a remarkable one… Happy 15 years of INJAZ!

My belief in youth gets only stronger and firmer by the day, and to that, I remain in utter admiration of the talent we foster in the MENA region. Youth have been and will always be the sole driver behind our work.

15 years ago, we gave a promise to our youth to empower them to reach their full potential. Reflecting on the past years, I am left with full content of the success we have achieved, the challenges we have overcome and the youth we have impacted. This is merely a milestone and I await in great aspiration the next great milestone we achieve.

Our late Soraya Salti said “What keeps us going is our belief in the optimism this generation holds and the determination to overcome every single challenge to see youth succeed.” We will remain in awe of her ability to empower millions of youth to own their economic and social independence. We will remain inspired by the extraordinary passion and zest she brought to every room she entered, every person she met, and every endeavor she embarked on.

With the mark of 3.5 million students impacted since inception in 2004, a new ambitious goal has been set calling for an annual growth of one million students by the year 2022. This goal aims to inspire change and shape a different and more diverse future that sees new opportunities and numerous avenues of innovation. Today, we are 15 years and part of a legacy of 100, a vision set a century ago to provide the tools and skillsets that prepare the youth to enter the competitive marketplace and bridge the gap between challenges and possibilities.

As we reflect on the successes of INJAZ, we can only feel proud of our strategic partners who created a reality for our organization’s vision and contributed immensely to its evolution. Thank you JA Worldwide, our esteemed board members, partners and volunteers for your unbending support. Much gratitude to your faith in the power of partnership.

We teach our youth to believe in themselves, trust their abilities and take pride in their talent, we believe in them and we #believeinINJAZ.

And they teach us to keep going.

INJAZ in the Classroom

Citi Foundation

Over the 2018-19 academic year, the Citi Foundation continued their ongoing partnership with INJAZ as part of a global grant with JA Worldwide, a comprehensive suite of programs including Company Program and Innovation Camp. Citi volunteers joined INJAZ’s network to provide a mixture of high-impact, one-day sessions and long-term mentorship for student companies to 14,328 students in Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and UAE. Additionally, the Citi Foundation sponsored the Client Focus Award at the 2018 Regional Company Competition in Kuwait, awarded to the Lebanese company Dr Leda and Kuwaiti company Re-Al.

BNYM

Be Entrepreneurial is a program that introduces students to the essential elements of developing a practical business plan and then challenges them to start an entrepreneurial venture while still in high school. Entrepreneurship Master Class encourages high school students to think about starting their own business as a career option while simultaneously helping them to identify the key entrepreneurial skills required. Students participate in an active simulated business game where they have the opportunity to put into action the concepts they have learned. Through this grant, INJAZ Lebanon impacted 400 students with Be Entrepreneurial during the course of the 2018-19 academic year.

MetLife

MetLife's global partnership with JA Worldwide under the LifeChanger Grant continued during the 2018-19 academic year in support of programs in Oman, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar and the UAE. Around 6,500 students were impacted with a variety of financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship programs, including More than Money, Personal Finance, Steer Your Career, Starting Right, It's My Business, Be a Leader, Head Start, and Company Program.

HSBC

JA More Than Money is a program supported by HSBC that teaches children about money basics – earning, spending, sharing and saving. It features six one-hour sessions each including interactive volunteer-led business and community games that are designed to help students learn the significance of money management. The program also provides take-home materials that allow students to share their new knowledge with family and friends. Volunteers are essential to the success of JA More Than Money, as they bring different perspectives and unique professional experiences to each and every session. This year, the program was implemented in 28 countries globally, with Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, and UAE representing MENA, impacting around 10,000 youth in the region.
